IWMCA hosts the U13 Les Kinnane Memorial Shield Carnival in January each year.
Les Kinnane was the typical gentleman of the game and we, along with the younger generation, can learn a lot from Les and the role he portrayed as a cricket official, co-ordinator and coach.
Vale Les Kinnane 1943 - 2012
Les Kinnane - Teacher, coach, sports administrator and groundsman. His dedication to teaching was matched only by his deep commitment to the game of cricket
Every Saturday morning he presided over the Ipswich School boys coaching clinic at North Ipswich. Keen to encourage talent and develop core skills, his proudest prodigy is international player Shane Watson.
He began coaching in schoolboy cricket in 1963 and was a state selector for Queensland Primary schools cricket for two decades. It is during this time he selected players such as Stuart Law and Martin Love to receive their first Queensland cap.
He was made an honorary life member of an incredible nine local, regional and state sports groups for the tireless work to promote youth participation in sporting activities.
He loved making sure kids had the opportunity to get out there and do things in sport and always believed you saw a better side of kids if they were involved in sport.
Most meetings in school sport didn't start without Les being in the room, and it didn't matter if it was cricket, rugby league, hockey, athletics or swimming - he was always there to contribute.
Carnival Format
The Les Kinnane Memorial Shield Carnival is held over 5 days. 2017 saw 10 regional teams entered.
The carnival is a mix of 50 overs games and T20 games. Teams entered and placed into pools. The 50 over games are a round robin format played on the first three days of the carnival. At the completion of the 50 over matches, all teams are placed into new pools for the T20 matches.
The top two teams in each pool at the end of the 50 over games, will move in the Les Kinnane Memorial Shield pool. Teams finishing 3rd and below in each pool will move into the Potbury Plate pool . Games will then move into the T20 phase of the carnival.
Points for Carnival
Points will be carried forward from the 50 over matches. The team with the most points in each pool at the end of the 5 days play will be declared the winners of the Shield and the Plate.
